Can you drink beer and still lose weight?

Its a common question,

With a simple answer…

Anyone who knows me, knows I love a nice beer, I even have shares in a brewery, A nice cold IPA after dinner is one of my favourite ends to a day.

Does it make me get fat ? Does it hell.

The key is moderation and portion (calorie) control …

If you want to lose weight, you need to be in a calorific deficit (consume less energy than you use).

So if you want to fit a beer in and still lose weight, you need to be aware of your total daily calories (I recommend you use my fitness pal to track this)

 

As i’ve explained before in order to lose 1 pound in a week, you need to be -500 calories per day,

So if you maintain your bodyweight on 2000 calories a day, you will need to have 1500 calories per day.

A bottle of lager (budweiser) hasĀ 145 calories …

Does this mean you can have 5 beers a day, consumingĀ 725 calories from your brewskis then have 775 calories from food and still lose weight ? … No it doesn’t … unfortunately

This is because not all calories are equal or used the same in the human body,

Calories are made up of 4 nutrient groups called macronutrients (i can explain these in more detail in another post)

But to keep it simple:

Protein: used for repairing/recovery (4 calories per gram), Carbohydrate: used for energy (4 calories per gram), Fat used for energy / hormone regulation (9 calories per gram),

and the 4th

Alcohol (7 calories per gram) not used for anything and generally easily stored as fat,

So even though in your bottle of budweiser

There is 10.6g carbohydrates and 1.3g of protein and 0 grams of fat totallingĀ 47.6 calories total

That means 97.4 calories are coming from an useable source (alcohol).

As I said at the start … the key is moderation,

1/2 bevvies a few times per week will NOT hinder your chances of losing weight as long as you stay under your calories, a full crate will.
